how to choose an outfit for your Engagement session

19 Tips for choosing your outfit

Your engagement session is a special time to capture your love story while looking and feeling your best. Choosing the right outfits, accessories, and even considering professional hair and makeup can elevate your experience, ensuring that your photos reflect your unique style and confidence. Let’s dive into how you can plan a picture-perfect wardrobe.

Classic & Timeless looks

Classic & Timeless looks

A white dress, a long flowy gown, or a well-fitted casual outfit like jeans and a classic button-down will never go out of style. These timeless pieces photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your connection.

Why simplicity shines

Simple, classic pieces create a clean and polished look while adding versatility. These outfits ensure your photos remain stunning and relevant for years to come.

Consider Your Environment

Your location should inspire your outfit choice. A glam dress may feel out of place on a rugged mountain, while cozy sweaters fit perfectly in an autumn woodland setting. Let the surroundings guide your style.

Dress for the Weather

Plan for the season and expected weather conditions. Layer up in cooler months or opt for breathable fabrics in the heat. Comfort and style go hand in hand.

Expressing Personal Style

Stay True to You

Your engagement session should reflect who you are. If dressing up excites you, embrace a chic, formal look. If a laid-back vibe feels more authentic, choose casual but polished pieces that make you feel at ease.

Confidence is Key

Wearing something that makes you feel confident will show in your photos. When you feel good, it naturally reflects in your expressions and body language.

Professional Hair & Makeup: A Worthwhile Investment

Why Book a Hair & Makeup Trial?

Scheduling a professional hair and makeup trial for your engagement session has several benefits. It ensures that your hair and makeup will photograph well and gives you a chance to see how the look holds up throughout the session. If adjustments are needed, you’ll know well before the wedding day.

Feel Confident & Camera-Ready

Professional stylists understand how to enhance your natural beauty for the camera. Makeup that looks great in person can sometimes appear washed out in photos, so having a skilled artist ensures you’ll look flawless from every angle.

Accessories for Impact

add personality

Statement jewelry, scarves, hats, or stylish jackets can elevate your look. They create visual interest and offer easy ways to switch up your style during the session.

Less is More

While accessories add character, keep them minimal to avoid overpowering your outfits. Choose one or two statement pieces that complement your style without taking focus away from your connection.

Thoughtful Use of Color

Choose Colors That Compliment

Neutral tones, pastels, and soft earth shades photograph beautifully and complement most skin tones. Add a pop of color for contrast but keep the palette harmonious.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Your outfits should work together without being identical. If you wear a soft blush dress, your fiancé could wear a coordinating shade like navy, gray, or khaki for a cohesive look.

Groom-Specific Styling Tips

Classic & Polished

Long pants, closed-toe shoes, blazers, and collared shirts create a refined look. These staples offer a timeless and masculine style that fits various engagement session settings.

Add Personal Touches

Details like ties, suspenders, pocket squares, and stylish watches add a touch of personality. They can subtly reflect your shared style while keeping the overall look polished.

What NOT to Wear

a floral dress can be distracting

avoid Distracting Patterns

This dress is beautiful, but its floral design doesn’t really match the background because we were in a large field. It also has high contrast between the colors making it more distracting. This is a beautiful photo nevertheless, however, had I suggested using neutral tones your eyes would naturally go to the pose first. So loud prints, logos, and clashing patterns can draw attention away from you. Stick to subtle designs or solids for a clean, polished appearance.

Skip Uncomfortable Outfits

If it doesn’t feel good, don’t wear it. An uncomfortable outfit can affect your mood and confidence, making it harder to relax in front of the camera.

Avoid Trend-Driven Outfits

While trendy styles may seem fun at the moment, they can quickly become outdated. Choose timeless pieces that will still look stunning in your photos years from now. This ensures your engagement images remain classic and meaningful.

Lay out your outfits ahead of time and pack extras like shoes, jewelry, and touch-up items. Be ready for anything unexpected, from weather changes to quick touch-ups.

Stay Relaxed & Have Fun
