My Favorite Engagement Session Locations in Saint Louis

Why Engagement Sessions are worth it

There will be few moments more exciting than getting engaged. After all, it’s the beginning of your story, and one you’ll want to remember and document well. So, whether you’re newly engaged or planning to be, you’ve probably already started thinking about your engagement session in St. Louis, what it includes, what to wear, and where to go for photos.

St. Louis offers a wide range of beautiful backdrops for engagement photography, from iconic city landmarks to quiet, scenic parks. Forest Park, Tower Grove, and the Missouri Botanical Garden are a few favorites—but there are also plenty of hidden gems worth considering.

Before we dive into my list of top St. Louis engagement photo locations, let’s talk about why I recommend scheduling an engagement session for every couple I work with.

4 Reasons Why these sessions are Important

#1 You Get Comfortable In Front Of The Camera

One of the most common things I hear from couples is, “We’re so awkward,” or “We have no idea how to pose.” And that’s totally normal. Most people aren’t used to being photographed together. That’s exactly why I recommend an engagement session. It gives us time to figure out what feels natural for you, without the pressure of the wedding day. I’ll guide you through everything—what to do with your hands, how to move, where to look—so when your wedding day comes, you already know what to expect. And that confidence shows in every image.

#2 You Get to experience my process

Engagement sessions give you a preview of what it’s like to work with me before your wedding day. You’ll get a feel for how I give direction, how I use light, and how I help you feel relaxed without forcing anything. That way, when your wedding day arrives, you’re not guessing what to expect—you already know how it’ll feel to be photographed.

#3 It Builds Trust

By the time the wedding day comes, you’ve already worked with me. You know how I direct, how I move, and how the experience feels. That trust helps everything run smoother—because instead of figuring things out on the fly, we’re already in sync.

#4 You get photos you’ll actually use

Engagement photos serve a real purpose. Most couples use them for save-the-dates, invitations, their wedding website, or prints at the reception. And I won’t lie—seeing my work in print at your wedding never gets old.

Best locations for your Saint Louis Engagement Session

Bee Tree Park

As a parent in St. Louis, I’ve discovered a lot of parks while chasing my kids around, and some have turned out to be incredible engagement photo spots too. Bee Tree Park is one of those hidden gems. Tucked away in South St. Louis County, it offers a little bit of everything: a quiet lake at the bottom of the hill with beautiful reflection shots, and an overlook with sweeping views of the Mississippi River. It’s especially stunning at sunset, when the whole sky lights up with color. Bee Tree is one of those rare spots that feels peaceful, scenic, and full of character all at once.

Gateway Arch National Park

The Gateway Arch National Park might be the smallest national park in the country, but it’s one of the most recognizable. A lot of couples choose it for their St. Louis engagement session because it gives them a mix of bold architecture and natural beauty in a single location.

The view from the Old Courthouse adds a touch of historic character and pairs well with the modern skyline. On the opposite side, the steps leading up to the Arch are great for wide, dramatic shots that highlight the scale and clean lines of the structure.

There’s more to work with beyond the Arch itself. The northern pond gives you a chance to capture the Arch reflected in the water—especially stunning on calm days. In the southern section of the park, the tree-lined walkway pops with fall color and adds depth to your photos. It’s a location that keeps things simple while still giving you a range of visual options.

Missouri Botanical Garden

The Missouri Botanical Garden is one of the best spots in St. Louis for engagement sessions—especially if you love being surrounded by nature. Each area of the garden has something different to offer. The Japanese Garden is quiet and peaceful, while the Rose Garden adds a burst of color and classic romance.

The well-kept paths, wide open greenery, and tucked-away corners make it easy to find spots that feel natural and relaxed. Whether you’re walking hand-in-hand through the trees or pausing by the water for a quick photo, the space gives you room to just be yourselves.

There’s no shortage of variety here, which means your gallery won’t feel repetitive. You get to move through the space, find what fits your vibe, and end up with photos that feel personal, not staged.

Castlewood State Park

Castlewood State Park is a go-to for couples who love the outdoors and want something more adventurous for their engagement session. The park’s trails lead to overlooks with wide views of the Meramec River and surrounding hills. The mix of forest, rock, and open sky gives you a lot of variety to work with.

Whether it’s early spring with fresh greenery or late fall with bold color, this location photographs well in just about any season. It’s a peaceful spot that doesn’t feel crowded, and the natural landscape gives your photos a more relaxed, unfiltered look.

If you’re drawn to wide open spaces, woodsy trails, or views that stretch for miles, Castlewood offers a solid mix of all three—without having to leave St. Louis.

Downtown Kirkwood

Downtown Kirkwood brings a cozy, small-town feel to your engagement session—without ever leaving the city. With its brick-lined sidewalks, historic storefronts, and locally loved cafés, it’s the kind of place that feels warm and welcoming the moment you arrive.

Whether you’re grabbing coffee at a corner café, window-shopping through the boutiques, or simply walking hand-in-hand down the street, the charm of Kirkwood adds a layer of everyday romance to your photos. It’s an ideal spot for couples who want their session to feel natural, relaxed, and full of candid moments.

If you’re drawn to lifestyle imagery with a personal, heartfelt vibe, Downtown Kirkwood offers the perfect setting to capture the simple joy of being together.

Forest Park

Forest Park is one of the most iconic spots for a St. Louis engagement session—and for good reason. With elegant landmarks, peaceful trails, and wide-open greens, there’s no shortage of gorgeous backdrops. Fun fact: it’s actually bigger than Central Park. True Story.

The World’s Fair Pavilion brings bold architecture and sweeping views. Art Hill, with the St. Louis Art Museum perched behind it, looks especially stunning at sunset. The Muny adds a touch of culture, while the Grand Basin—with its fountains and still water—offers a calm, romantic setting.

Whether you’re going for timeless elegance or something more relaxed and natural, Forest Park gives you space to move, explore, and let your story unfold.

Columbia Bottom Conservation Area

Columbia Bottom Conservation Area is one of my favorite spots for engagement sessions—and it’s easy to see why. With wide-open fields, winding trails, and sweeping river views, it’s the kind of place that feels like pure freedom. It’s vast, cinematic, and full of natural beauty that shifts with the seasons.

When the timing’s right, golden sunsets pour across the landscape, turning everything warm and radiant. And if you’re lucky enough to catch the sunflower fields in bloom, the backdrop becomes downright magical—rows of vibrant yellow against open skies and soft evening light.

There’s a wildness to Columbia Bottom that makes your photos feel untamed and alive. It’s perfect for couples who want something romantic and grounded in nature, with a touch of adventure and a whole lot of sky.

Klondike Park

Tucked away in Augusta, Missouri, Klondike Park is a hidden gem for couples who want something a little more off the beaten path. Once a quarry, this scenic park now offers a landscape unlike anywhere else in the area—think bright white sand, dramatic river bluffs, and peaceful lakeside views all in one spot.

With sweeping views of the Missouri River, quiet trails, and a unique mix of rugged and serene backdrops, it’s perfect for couples who want their session to feel adventurous, romantic, and a little unexpected. The contrast between the stark white sand and lush greenery gives your photos a cinematic edge without needing to travel far.

Whether you’re chasing golden hour on the bluffs or cozying up by the lake, Klondike Park delivers a peaceful, dramatic atmosphere that makes your love story stand out.

CityGarden

In the heart of downtown St. Louis, Citygarden offers a bold, modern backdrop for couples who want something a little more artistic for their engagement session. With its contemporary sculptures, reflective pools, and lush plantings tucked between high-rises, it blends art, architecture, and nature in a way that feels both vibrant and intimate.

Whether you’re sharing a moment beside the fountains, walking through the greenery, or posing with one of the many striking installations, Citygarden turns an ordinary city stroll into something completely cinematic. The surrounding skyline adds an extra layer of energy, giving your photos that perfect mix of romance and urban edge.

If you’re drawn to sleek lines, creative spaces, and a bit of downtown flair, Citygarden makes for a stunning, unconventional setting.

The Katy Trail in Rocheport, Missouri, offers a peaceful and scenic backdrop that feels like a hidden escape. Winding along the Missouri River, the trail is lined with towering bluffs, quiet forests, and open farmland—giving you a beautiful variety of natural settings to work with.

Highlights like the historic Rocheport Tunnel and the old Missouri River Bridge add a rustic, nostalgic feel that makes your photos stand out. Whether you’re walking the shaded trail or pausing by the riverbank, the atmosphere is calm, romantic, and full of charm.

If you’re up for a short road trip, this spot delivers timeless scenery and intimate moments that photograph beautifully.

Garden of the Gods - Herod, IL

If you’re looking for a location that feels truly epic, Garden of the Gods in Herod, Illinois, delivers. With towering sandstone formations and sweeping views of the Shawnee National Forest, this spot offers one of the most dramatic natural backdrops in the region.

Whether you’re hiking the scenic trails or standing together on Camel Rock, the views are nothing short of magical—especially at sunrise or sunset, when the golden light washes over the cliffs and valleys below. It’s the kind of place that feels otherworldly but still deeply grounded in nature.

For couples who love adventure and want photos that feel bold, raw, and timeless, Garden of the Gods is absolutely worth the drive.

Beautiful

Whitaker Point—also known as Hawksbill Crag—is one of Arkansas’s most iconic locations, and it’s easy to see why. Perched high above the Ozark National Forest, this rugged rock outcrop offers sweeping views of the valley below. At sunrise or sunset, the entire landscape glows with golden light, adding even more magic to the moment.

Whether you’re standing at the edge of the crag or tucked into the quiet woods nearby, the dramatic cliffs and panoramic scenery bring a sense of awe and adventure to your photos. It’s a one-of-a-kind backdrop for couples who want something bold, natural, and unforgettable. Please take me back.

The Place That Means The Most

Joel and Jen laughing as he hugs her

The perfect engagement session location isn’t based on where I’ve photographed before. It comes down to what fits you best. If hiking isn’t your thing, places like Garden of the Gods or Whitaker Point might not feel right. A cozy coffee shop, a city stroll, or somewhere close to home might capture your story more honestly.

While I’ll never turn down returning to one of these iconic places or going somewhere new like the rockies, most often, the best place is just a place—one that holds meaning for you. Maybe it’s where you spend quiet mornings, where you first met, or even your own backyard. The photo above? That was taken in their backyard. It wasn’t an engagement session—they’re already married—but it’s still one of my favorite images. Nothing posed or planned, just a quiet, meaningful moment right where they live and love.

So whether we’re on a mountaintop, which lets go, or in a familiar corner of your life, (again, lets go!) the focus is the same—creating images that feel natural, personal, and true to your relationship.
